Wave Rampant

Lee Mothes

Acrylic on Canvas

The ocean’s energy continually fascinates me. I use graphite pencil, watercolor, or acrylic on canvas to say something about sunlight on waves, clouds, and sand. I work from watercolors I’ve done on the beach, or photos, often using several images to make a good composition.

I’ve been working on various series of ocean paintings and drawings since I was a teenager growing up on the California Coast.

Though I live in Wisconsin, I travel once or twice a year to the Pacific coast to observe and photograph the surf and sky – my ocean fix.

Breaking wave from a photograph of winter surf I took at Cape Kiwanda, Oregon.
