Katherine Steichen Rosing
As a native Wisconsinite (born and raised in Appleton) our ever changing forests and lakes are part of my soul. Forests reveal cycles of time and nature which emerge as rhythmic patterns of line, space, color, and texture in my paintings and drawings. Environmental themes are embedded in my work and I am increasingly exploring climate change with respect to our forests.
Using paint mixed with gel mediums I build relief surfaces and scumble numerous layers of color to enhance the play of light and color. My smaller and medium sized paintings are made on cradled birch panels or sometimes watercolor paper. The very large paintings are done on unstretched canvas and linen so they can be rolled for transport with a painted border that allows the work to be installed from grommets or to be stretched in its final home.
In addition to painting, I have developed a method of working with leaf rubbings to create elegant large scale graphite and mixed media drawings on archival Tyvek. The scroll drawings are nearly ten foot high but like a scroll the display height can be varied and the drawings are easily rolled for transport and storage. Recently this technique has expanded to include mixed media leaf drawings created with Caran d’Ache Neocolor pastel over acrylic glazes in a square format with circle as symbol of the tree canopy and our earth.
