Jazz at the Trout presents The Juli Wood Quartet
Apr 18 6:30pm
Jazz at The Trout Season IX celebrates “Women do Jazz”, featuring the virtuosity and versatility of the women of jazz throughout the season.
Inspired by Art Farmer’s 1964 recording of Swedish folk songs, “To Sweden With Love,” Chicago saxophonist Juli Wood delved into her own Finnish heritage for material to explore on her newest recording, Synkka Metsa / Dark Forest. The hauntingly beautiful melodies and harmonies invite new jazz interpretations. Wood and
her quartet – Paul Silbergleit on guitar, Clay Schaub on bass and drummer Mike Schlick – will play traditional Karelian, Finnish and Aland Island songs along with two compositions by famed Finnish musician Matti Jurva, as well as some of their favorite jazz standards.
“She weaves her own straight forward statements from the horn with a great deal of heart and a real heaping helping of soul.” – Jan-Erik Holmberg, Hufvudstadsbladet/Helsi
