TMA Atrium

The Art is Her exhibition series celebrates women artists and champions their goal of achieving museum presence equal to men. TMA dedicates its atrium to a series of solo exhibitions by women artists and reminds visitors that equal representation has yet to be achieved in art today.

Artist Statement

For Art is Her, Xie starts each painting with watercolor/ink underlayer, incorporating traditional Chinese painting principles to build the foundation. Then she layers acrylic paints, pastels, and other western mediums. This process mirrors her experience as a first generation immigrant where inner conflicts arise from opposing values and her self identity is challenged. Through this series, Xie documents her transformation while creating inner harmony.

About the Artist

Xizhou Xie is a Madison-based artist. She expresses herself in multiple styles. In some series she uses only acrylic, or paints only flowers, while in other series she incorporates watercolor, ink, graphite, pastels, and acrylic. Experimenting with different styles allows her to bring new ways of storytelling as an artist.
