The Art is Her exhibition series celebrates women artists and champions their goal of achieving museum presence equal to men. TMA dedicates its atrium to a series of solo exhibitions by women artists and reminds visitors that equal representation has yet to be achieved in art today.
About the Artist
Shiloah Symone Coley works in an interdisciplinary collage approach in her practice where she explores the narratives present in existing archives of American media while simultaneously creating new, more intimate familial and community archives driven by personal narratives.
Her practice is a constant state of deconstructing and reconstructing, pulling apart and tugging away at the narratives perpetuated in the media and instead asking her audience to turn inwards and to community and family as we construct and rediscover voices of the past, present, and future.
A journalist by training, Shiloah seeks to make sense of the world by interviewing others. She interviews the women in her family about their daily lives, histories, and emotions. This family audio collection and photo archiving evolved into animations centering the interiority of a person, family, community, and feeling. can I keep it in my pocketbook? is her most recent animation done in collaboration with her Wanna (maternal grandma), mom, and extended community. She offers much gratitude to all those who participated in this animation by submitting family photos and contributing to a new archive constructed by her community.
